A former Augustinian monastery as an urban retreat

A former Augustinian monastery is transformed into an urban retreat that embraces the sacred soul of the site while captivating with modernist touches in every little detail.

The hotel is located in Het Groen Kwartier (the Green Quarter) a traffic-free area on the site of a large 19th-century former military hospital that once belonged to the Belgian Army. Van Hool and De Scheemaecker, the owners of the hotel, immediately recognized the potential. It is a lively neighborhood with many new stores, restaurants and small cafes. It is close to the Zurenborg neighborhood with its impressive Art Nouveau and fin-de-siècle mansions.

For the reconstruction, of the property consisting of 5 buildings, the well-known Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen could be won. He is one of the leading figures in the Antwerp design scene. His style is unobtrusive, subtle and timeless. In some ways, he combines modernity with a touch of conservatism.

The former monastery houses 44 rooms and suites, ranging in size from 16 to 41 square meters. All have a double bed, a flat-screen TV, air-conditioning, a laptop safe, a well-stocked minibar, wireless speakers, Egyptian percale bedding, a private bathroom with a walk-in shower (some with a freestanding bathtub), and Le Labo toiletries.

BEST ROOM

The crowning glory of Augustinian heritage. The lavish august Suite welcomes you with a personal living room, a large sleeping area and a private bathroom with walk-in shower and large bathtub. Enjoy views of the courtyard, chapel and swimming pond from your private balcony. The room is accessible via a small staircase.

RESTAURANT

The restaurant is located in the corridor surrounding the original chapel. From the beginning of the restoration, everything has been carefully planned to offer a unique dining experience in the authentic spaces of the monastery.

Expect seasonal menus that focus on the produce, the season and the terroir. A creative culinary experience curated by Nick Bril. Nick and Chef Pieter Starmans define august’s cuisine as modern brasserie fare. Enjoy a refined meal under the black steel and glass roof of the conservatory.

BAR

Enjoy elegant drinks and tasty bar food at the august Bar. The august Bar is open to everyone. Experience the beautiful garden with covered, heated terrace and the atmospheric ambience inside while relaxing in the lounge.

WELLNESS

The hotel’s own wellness area invites you to warm up in the sauna and hammam. Cool off with a fresh ice scrub, in the outdoor shower on the adjacent “Cour Anglaise” or in the outdoor swimming pond. August Wellness has a separate entrance and is also accessible to non-hotel guests.

The Neighborhood

The hotel is adjacent to PAKT, an exciting repurposed industrial site that houses a melting pot of creative businesses in renovated warehouses and has an ambitious “agriculture in the city” rooftop project.

Also nearby are the Zurenborg district, with its impressive Art Nouveau and fin-de-siècle mansions, the De Koninck brewery – a family business that has been brewing the local beer “Bolleke” since 1833 – and the main thoroughfare. Jane, a two Michelin-starred restaurant, is located in the former hospital chapel in the center of the complex.

The area is perfect for exploring by bike, on foot, or by public transportation.

Re-engage your Senses

The Ambiente™ Sedona offers discerning guests an immediate nature experience. Located on the edge of Red Rock State Park, the architecturally interesting resort is a modern and elegant retreat surrounded by stunning scenery. The landscape hotel is the first of its kind in North America. During construction, careful attention was paid to disturbing the surrounding natural environment as little as possible. Respect for the land and the flora and fauna it contains is evident throughout the property. For example, the restoration of an ancient watercourse was included in the design, which guests can admire as a calming production.

Also in the furnishing of the residential units, emphasis was placed on transferring the original beauty of Sedona to the interior of the rooms. The interiors are designed with casual elegance. The 40 atriums are decorated in soft earth tones, and floor-to-ceiling windows offer 180-degree views of the national park and iconic red rock formations. Each atrium is luxuriously appointed and features a rooftop deck, fire pit, and day bed. Thus, they can enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing the comfort and style of your atrium. The modern ambiance of the hotel is uncompromising and authentic. The location in the “Red- Rock-Statepark” is unique. Thus, contemporary luxury and the natural environment combine in a harmonious way.

Star Reflections – ATRIUM

Escape to the private rooftop terrace of your accommodation, where you can make yourself comfortable on the lounger while the fireplace chases away the cold. Dive into the night sky with a glass of wine and the sea of stars that stretches above you.  Sedona is one of only 20 certified “dark sky communities” in the world that offer a particularly impressive view of the night sky.

The cozy Star Reflection Atriums are located in the center of the grounds where several streams converge, giving you easy and convenient access to the Forty1 restaurant and serene pool.

Creekside Reflections – ATRIUM

Life is water and water is life. It is said that the sound of water directs the neural waves in our brain, helping us find peace. Is it any wonder that 50% of the world’s population lives near or around water?

A simple push of the bedside blackout curtains opens your Creekside Reflections atrium to the IMAX-like scenery of flowing streams around you. These atriums also feature a rooftop terrace and a creekside terrace for stargazing and tranquility at night.

The Creekside Reflection Atriums are centrally located between the lagoon, near the Welcome Center and Velvet Spa, and within walking distance of the Forty 1 restaurant and quiet pool.

Forest Reflections – ATRIUM

Push the button for the blackout curtains on your bed, and the view is revealed to a backdrop of manzanita, juniper, Arizona cypress, sycamore and ponderosa pines. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to observe native wildlife through picture windows.

Views from the pristine Coconino National Forest to several iconic Red Rock formations, flowing streams and the resort’s serene pool.

The location of your atrium was chosen to reveal unforgettable views of Sedona and the entire property.

Landscape Reflections – ATRIUM

When you wake up in the morning, and all they do is open the blackout curtains, the view opens up to the Coconino National Forest, the iconic red rock formations and flowing streams that immerse you in the nature around you.

Watch the horizon as an afternoon thunderstorm moves over the mountains, or catch a winter snowfall dusting the Sedona Red Rocks. Venture up the spiral staircase to your private patio and enjoy special delicacies and drinks next to the fire pit while admiring the incredible play of color as the sun rises and sets over the red rock landscape.

Aktivitäten und Annehmlichkeiten im Hotel

For the weary and the energetic. All who like to eat and drink. Who like to see beautiful things and seek adventure. Or rest. Or anything in between.

The Refugium Lunz is located directly on the church square in Lunz am See, the Ybbs and the Gothic parish church from the 17th century to the side. The history of the house with its 23 rooms also goes back 4 centuries.

The owners, Joachim Mayr and Heinz Glatzl, felt obligated to this history when remodeling. They did not want to create just another design hotel, but rather a tender coexistence between old and new, a place of contemplation and refuge, precisely the Refugium.

The vision of a place where the desire for new things and the appreciation of the past find common expression has taken shape with the Refugium. Heart and soul, dedication and the clear aesthetic concept are reflected in the design of the rooms. It is a skillful play with textures, structures, shapes and colors. The commitment to authentic craftsmanship and attention to detail can be seen and felt throughout the hotel.

Numerous partners, from the Formdepot cooperative founded by Joachim and Heinz, were involved in the remodeling and furnishing of the hotel. Formdepot is an association of craftsmen, architects and designers based in Vienna Ottakring.

Best Room – Suite “Maria & Peter”

With 46m² and a large terrace overlooking the church, this suite offers enough space. Besides a living room with a small library and 2 bedrooms, the suite also has a sauna.

HOSTS – Fanny & Christian. Metzger & Metzger

Fanny laughs a lot and likes people. That’s a good prerequisite for pretty much everything at the Refugium. Especially for making the guests feel comfortable. Christian takes care of the physical well-being.

Culinary

In the kitchen, Christian Metzger is in charge and he follows a simple philosophy: not more of everything, but enough of the essentials. A special kind of luxury. Care, passion and time go into everything that is put on the table.

In addition to his work as Sous Chef at the famous “Motto am Fluß” in Vienna, he ran the restaurant “Die Metzgerei” together with Fanny with great success.

Activities / Services

This is where old world elegance meets modern design.

After careful restoration, the classic structure of the house blends seamlessly with the local architecture and complements the beauty of the surroundings.

The heart of La Valise is the oasis in the courtyard. Here, time ceases to exist. The gently swaying lemon trees, the murmur of the water and the sun’s incoming rays make space and time melt away.  A double Chichimeca staircase forms the center of the garden and frames the ancient cultural omens. The aesthetics of the architecture and the staged design elements create a serene, almost mystical athmosphere.

The rooms and suites highlight the uniqueness of Mexican craftsmanship and Aztec symbolism. Contrasted with modern design elements, an ensemble is created that combines the past and the present.

La Valise San Miguel was designed by Mexican-Italian artist Pedro Friedberg, who left his signature on the wall embossments in the hotel’s suites. The artist and designer is known for his surrealist works characterized by lines, colors and ancient symbols.

They enjoy their breakfast either in the suite, in the courtyard or another cozy niche in the hotel. Ingredients for the delicious smoothies or local pastry specialties all come from the region. La Valise doesn’t have a restaurant, but it does offer a range of appetizers, wines, and cocktails to round out your culinary stay.

Spa treatments are performed right in your suite. The experienced therapists offer a range of massages, facials and rituals for body, mind and soul.

Best Room – Master Suite

The master suite, Grande Dame, is the largest suite that acts as the ultimate pied-à-terre in San Miguel, your home away from home. It features a cozy living room and spacious bedroom with contrasting black and white mid-century design. The bathroom houses a granite tub under two domes that create a surreal mood with stars, mirrors and shimmering lights.

Along the colonial street of La Roma in Mexico City are the most elegant townhouses in the Mexican capital. One of these houses is home to the exclusive boutique hotel La Valise Mexico City. This hidden gem with only 3 rooms, has become a real insider tip since its opening. Those who want to stay here should plan well in advance. Curated collectibles and antiques combined with Namron’s own design create a world that enchants. In the middle of the lively metropolis and yet an oasis of tranquility.

Best Room – La Terraza Suite

In the La Terrazza Suite you have the choice – do I sleep under the open sky, or rather with a roof over my head.  A king size bed slides onto the large private terrace if you wish. Under the open sky, under a cozy blanket, you can enjoy your favorite movies over the city streets. Refined luxury and selected art complete the extravagant ambience of the suite.

Culinary delights

The hotel doesn’t have an in-house restaurant, but renowned chef Elena Reygades of the Italian-Mexican restaurant Rosetta, will whip up a unique menu for guests to enjoy in their suite upon request.  Those who prefer to go out to dine are spoiled for choice in the La Rosa neighborhood. Countless gourmet restaurants are on the doorstep.

An interplay between far and near, nature and architecture

The architecture is reminiscent of the Tyrolean “Heustadl” which is typical of alpine farming. The clarity of the architecture is continued in the interior – you won’t find any overloaded alpine chic here. The use of traditional materials is interpreted in a modern way and creates an authentic, contemporary ambience, designed with a lot of respect in dealing with nature and the environment. Especially local materials from Tyrol, such as loden and Tyrolean wood were incorporated into the planning.

Bergwiesenglück

A place to connect to nature, make time for yourself and the things that matter

Imagined by the global architecture firm BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group designed Hôtel des Horlogers for architecture and nature to be one, complying with Minergie Eco Standards. Thanks to an avant-garde concept, visitors are immediately immersed in the natural environment of the Vallée de Joux, one of the cradles of Swiss complicated watches. BIG conceived the hotel so that all the rooms would offer a breath-taking view over the Risoud forest. Departing from the usual codes of hotel architecture, the building consists of slabs descending towards the valley and tilting slightly to embrace the topography while creating a continuous path into nature.

Inside AU*M breaks down boundaries, allowing harmony to arise between architecture and nature. The interior concept is inspired by a walk through the Risoud forest. An interior passageway follows the hotel’s atypical zigzagging structure and connects the 50 rooms, varying into different categories, from the Valley Guest Room to the Signature Suite. The hotel also encompasses two restaurants and a bar open to everybody, wellness area with two treatment rooms, a hammam, a sauna, a relaxation space, one sensory shower and a fitness room  as well as three seminar rooms. The two restaurants take their guests on an exclusive culinary journey and impress with the use of local products and ingredients, enhanced by a selection of regional wines as well as locally brewed beers. In addition, the hotel has its own fruit and vegetable garden.

As a meeting place for locals, mindful travellers in search of the power of nature, watch, architecture and food lovers, Hotel des Horlogers invites visitors to connect with nature, make time for yourself and the things that matter. Its sustainable approach encompasses local partnerships to reduce its carbon footprint, support local communities and participate in the region’s economy.

Rooms and Suites

All 50 rooms have a large bay window which offers a breathtaking view over the Risoud Forest. The rooms and suites meet the highest standards of eco-responsible tourism and present a warm and welcoming decor with raw materials from the region. They are equipped with contemporary design furniture and sophisticated comfort.

The Wellness Spa

Only for guests of the Ecohotel El Agua

Nestled in a quiet corner of the EcoHotel El Agua, the wellness spa offers guests a sanctuary of serenity during their stay. Admire the views of the cascading ravine beneath the hotel’s feet as you relax in the saltwater jacuzzi. Those looking for an exciting way to stimulate circulation will enjoy the chilly temperatures of the plunge pool. Meanwhile, behind the elaborately carved wooden door, guests can soothe tired muscles in the sauna, enjoy moments of unwinding in the hammam and sample a menu of treatments inspired from all corners of the world. Man’s love affair with the sauna is an enduring, worldwide relationship that dates back to antiquity. As soon as man discovered how to create fire, he wasted no time in discovering how to benefit from its warm embrace. It is universally human to seek refuge in the warmth of a sauna. Although the concept has its roots deeply intertwined with Scandinavian culture, every civilisation has its own version. From Turkish hammams and Japanese onsen to Mexican temazcals and Russian banyas, humans have sought heat for healing and purification since the dawn of time.

The Spirit

The mission is to offer guests a holistic wellness experience from the moment they set foot in the hotel. Based on the practices of Hippocratic medicine and integrating the sacred teachings of Eastern and Western medicine, the aim is to harmonise mind, body and spirit. In this way, problems are adressed at their root, allowing the body to regain balance and heal itself. Anthony Picq, founder of NAOKŌ healing hotels, parent company of EcoHotel El Agua, believes that the body can regain optimal health with the right healing protocols, he is the one who brings the hotels philosophy to life. As a naturopath, phytotherapist and self-taught hygienist, Anthony has instilled these practices into a wide range of treatments.

Space

With elements of wabi-sabi and Feng Shui design, the spa reflects the relaxing, minimalist aesthetic of Villa Olivo and its surroundings. Natural hues and handcrafted artwork in the corners soothe racing thoughts. The design details reflect a wellness journey that spans the globe. From the woodwork preserved using the Japanese Shou sugi ban method to the Moroccan-inspired architectural forms used to create the hammam, ZIRĀ studios (the brainchild of Anthony Picq) have created an opulent oasis of calm.

The therapies

Ecohotel El Agua is the first design hotel to offer a comprehensive holistic range of integrative medical therapies.

The main therapies include:

Simply romantic

In the south of Italy in the Sassi of Matera, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, the Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita was constructed as a cultural project of restoration of ancient caves. With the project, the Sextantio Group and the Cathedral Society want to honor the historical heritage. The buildings and caves now serve as spacious, romantic boutique rooms and suites and impress with authentic romance. The suites and common room in the Cripta della Civita, an ancient rock church, offer breathtaking views of the Gravina stream against the backdrop of Murgia Park.

Classic & traditional

Culinary wishes remain unfulfilled at Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita. The day starts with a hearty breakfast on the terrace overlooking the dramatic landscape. The famous bread of Matera, freshly baked focaccia, homemade sweets, fresh seasonal fruit, mozzarella, ricotta, natural yogurt and delicious jams are supplied by the organic farmer in the area.

At the exclusive dinner, by candlelight, flickering fireplace and classical music, local wines and traditional dishes of Matera are served in the rock church. Under the guidance of a talented cook from Matera, you can learn the ancient art of making homemade pasta according to authentic recipes. The deconsecrated 13th century church can also be booked for a private dinner for 2 – a suggestive and distinctly romantic experience in a mystical setting.

Best Room – Honeymoon suite with fireplace

The cave 13 or better known as the honeymoon suite, it is the only cave that extends over several levels: about 80 square meters, divided between a gallery sleeping area with large window and balcony with panoramic views of Murgia Park, living room and bath in a romantic exclusive cave with fireplace.
